There is his first video called Power Drumming, there is a bootleg clinic that he was actually selling form his site not too long ago that's good. The last Planet X cd MoonBabies is my fav because Simon Phillips produced it and gave Virgil the best drum sound.

Sounded like a great Gig Andy Thanks for the review. As Randy said Moonbabies(Planet X) is a must. Try out his work with Joel Hoekstra(guitar player)on "THe Moon Is Falling" for a nice blend of styles in an ecclectic setting, Virgil's feel is very good and it is very Grooving much of the time with the trademark technique and chops. You can check out his own solo effort OTV or On The Virg, "Serious Young Insects" is the album name a Killer album. That is a good place to start.
And definitely check him out in clinic if you get the chance, you will not be dissapointed.

Donati's first video is NOT Power Drumming, but Obsessive Rhythms. This is a young Virg w/leather jacket. Well produced from his Aussie days. Worth getting.

Virg also plays w/Freakhouse. This is below the Ring of Fire gig, a grunge sounding group...in the vein of Creed. When I saw him playing with this band in a small Hollywood club, he played groove and save for a 30 second ending of a tune where he was VIRG, you would have never known it was the guy from CAB or PX.

On the Virg--Serious Young Insect is the Physical Graffiti of Progressive Music IMO.

i was listening to serious young insects today and when i managed to pick myself up off the floor i thought what a huge part of the writing in PX is down to Virg.

i have the "live at the grainstore" on my hard drive ATM transferred from the original vinyl release i purloined from a freind years ago. some real gems on it ..even a steve morse cover (cruise missile) on there (def worth a listen or 3)

Very true MSCearly, Virgil's compositional skills are VERY good. Much of his ability on the Piano comes through in his Song Writing.

I like the first one Obsessive Rhythms too, plus it comes with a little booklet. Power Drumming is very good too, though the video quality/lighting isn't quite as good.

I didn't really like Don't Drink the Water and may have even given it away. It's a rehearsal tape of jam ideas, basically. Great players too infrequently listening to each other, IMO.

The Joel Hoekstra stuff is all good. I have both disks and recommend them. You get to hear Virgil playing other styles than just fusion/prog on them. Joel's a virtuouso with a strange sense of humor that comes through on both disks.

I played with Joel in a couple of bands and I'm on a track of Joel's first CD, Undefined. Joel was the guitar player in my old jobbing band, and we did a bunch of sessions together and an original project too.

I've just transcribed a few examples of Virgil for an upcoming issue of Drum! from Joel's latest CD for a feature I did on Progressive Rock drumming. Hopefully, they won't get edited out!

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Pocket, I said the very same thing [idea] as you did after i'd 1st heard it AW - that it was the "CCEB1" of progressive rock/metal.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">From what I've heard [from V himself], Planet X is basically Virgil's band & concept - it was/is his concept, he does much of the writing, & it basically revolves around his expertise in rhythm.
